The space itself has a lot going for it. The open ceilings, natural lighting, minimalist design, and overall atmosphere make it an appealing place to grab a coffee and spend some time working, reading, or meeting with friends. While the minimalist furniture fits the aesthetic, it isn’t particularly comfortable if you plan to stay for an extended period. Unfortunately, a couple of recurring issues keep me from enjoying the space as much as I’d like. First, the Sunday DJ. In principle, it’s a fun idea and can certainly add energy to the venue. The problem is the volume. The music is often so loud that it’s difficult to concentrate, have a conversation, or even place an order without raising your voice. It seems to assume that everyone in the café—and even those nearby—is there for a dance party. Many customers choose coffee shops because they’re looking for a comfortable place to work, study, or simply enjoy a quiet cup of coffee. Lowering the volume just a few decibels would preserve the lively atmosphere while making the space far more enjoyable for everyone. Second, the pricing feels excessive for what is being served. I understand inflation has affected restaurants and cafés everywhere, but the value simply isn’t there. Charging around $15 for avocado toast—something many people could easily make at home for a fraction of the cost and, arguably, with better quality—is difficult to justify. Even more surprising, the least expensive food item on the menu is a bagel with cream cheese for $6, while nearly everything else starts at $11 or more. Premium pricing can absolutely work, but it needs to be backed by an equally premium product and experience. Here, the balance feels off. I genuinely want to like this place because it has the foundation to be an excellent neighborhood café. With a little more consideration for customers looking for a quieter environment—particularly on Sundays—and a better alignment between pricing and value, it could easily become one of my regular spots.

Rooted Coffee (Walnut Creek, CA) Rooted Coffee is the kind of place where you come in for “just a drink” and somehow leave with toast, waffles, and donuts. The Avocado Dream Toast (cashew cream cheese, hemp seeds, chili flakes) was fresh, creamy, and had the perfect little kick. The Kind and Nutty waffle with added chocolate chips was warm, comforting, and honestly hard to share. We also grabbed a glazed chocolate donut and a cinnamon sugar donut—both simple, classic, and exactly what you want them to be. The iced mocha with oat milk was smooth, not overly sweet, and finished way too fast. Great food, great coffee, great vibe. We’ll definitely be back.

I'm at Rooted PH almost every week, but I had to stop by the WC location to try their exclusive seasonal Lemon Raspberry Oh Mega Donut.  As they describe it on their website, it's "gluten-free donut, nutrient dense, high in omegas from chia seeds, hemp seeds, and flax seeds, sweetened with coconut sugar." Oh Mega Donuts are a staple in my house. I always have a batch in the freezer. Their seasonal flavors are always delicious, and honestly it's hard to believe something that tastes has such clean ingredients.  Their drinks are also great and I love that they offer so many non-dairy milk options.  My go-to is a Matcha Latte, The Vibe, or Vanilla Iced Coffee. While I was there, the owner, Vera, happened to sit next to me and we ended up having a great conversation about our favorite Oh Mega flavors and their healthy ingredients. What stood out was how kind and genuinely invested she is in Rooted. She asked me all kinds of questions about what I enjoy there and was so passionate about the food, the customer experience, and overall quality. It made me appreciate Rooted even more. I'm always happy to support Rooted, and I'm very grateful I had the chance to meet Vera. She's incredibly warm, kind, and clearly cares deeply.
