Henry W. Coe State Park (Morgan Hill, Visitor Center area) I visited Henry W. Coe State Park after a friend told me about a gray fox family that had been seen there. I arrived around 7:00 AM, even though the park office officially opens at 8:00 AM, and the drive into the park was beautiful. I was already spotting plenty of birds along the way before I even reached the visitor center. Unfortunately, there was construction happening around the visitor center during my visit, so it wasn’t quite as peaceful as I had hoped. I didn’t get to see the gray fox family, but I did hear them somewhere on the property, which at least confirmed they were nearby. The highlight of my morning was definitely the California Quail. There were several family groups with tiny chicks running around, and they were an absolute joy to watch. I spent most of my time wandering the nearby trails and campground area, not hiking long distances but following whatever small wildlife caught my attention. Since the campground wasn’t very full, it was easy to explore quietly. One of the most memorable sights was looking out over the landscape and seeing the fog sitting in the valley below while I was above it. The elevation here is about 2,700 feet (823 m), and that early morning view alone made the visit worthwhile. I visited in July 2026, so the hills had their typical golden summer appearance. It was still beautiful, but I can imagine this park is absolutely spectacular in spring when everything turns lush green. I definitely plan to return then. There is an $8 day-use entrance fee. You can either bring cash and use the self-pay envelope at the entrance (I’ve included a video showing how the payment box works), or pay by credit card inside the visitor center once it opens (8am). The visitor center has restrooms located just behind the building. Cold beverages, snacks are available for purchase, and i noticed several picnic areas. One thing I hope the park improves is the parking lot, which has quite a few potholes and a rough surface. It was manageable, but it could definitely use some maintenance. If you enjoy wildlife, birding, peaceful scenery, and don’t mind exploring at a slower pace, Henry W. Coe State Park is well worth a visit. Even though my target gray foxes remained hidden, the quail families, birdlife, and the beautiful morning above the fog made it a memorable trip.

It takes a while to drive up, but there are great views along the drive. Very quiet and peaceful area for hiking and seeing wildlife. Saw a quail family with three little quail babies walking along their mommy and daddy.

Was fun backpacking experience with a nice secluded campsite, a cute little creek next to it. Has a nice swimming hole and was overall a really fun trip. Got to see some hawks, some blue jays and lots of deer too ! Not to mention all the parks personnel were really helpful and informative ! The park itself is Green and has wonderful views and is super accessible from the city. Would definitely visit again when I find the time to see more of it.
