I recently visited the Qutb Minar complex in New Delhi, and while exploring the area I noticed several fascinating historical structures around it. One of the most interesting among them is Alai Minar, which stands beside the Qutub Minar. While observing the structure closely, you can clearly understand how these monuments were constructed centuries ago. The structures seem to be made using different types of stones bound together with mortar, which were then shaped into massive architectural forms. In the Qutub Minar itself, you can see small polished stone blocks and excellent finishing, showing the remarkable craftsmanship of that time. The Alai Minar was started by Alauddin Khalji, who planned to build a tower even taller than the Qutub Minar. However, after his death the construction stopped, leaving only the first massive level completed. Even in its unfinished state, it gives a clear idea of the construction techniques used during that period. You need to take an entry ticket first, which costs around ₹35 per person. Overall, it’s a wonderful place to explore history, architecture, and engineering from centuries ago.

Alai Minar, located within the historic Qutb Complex in Delhi, is an intriguing monument that reflects the ambitious vision of the Delhi Sultanate. It was commissioned by Alauddin Khalji in the early 14th century with the intention of building a tower twice the height of the nearby Qutb Minar. However, the structure was left incomplete after his death, and today only the massive first tier stands as a reminder of what could have been one of the tallest towers of its time. Despite being unfinished, Alai Minar is impressive in its own way. The enormous circular base, built of rough red sandstone and rubble masonry, gives visitors a sense of the grand scale originally planned. Walking around the site, one can imagine the architectural ambition and engineering challenges of that era. The monument blends seamlessly with the surrounding ruins, adding depth and historical context to the Qutb Complex. Though it may not be as famous or ornate as Qutb Minar, Alai Minar holds significant historical value. It offers visitors a unique perspective on medieval ambition, architectural planning, and the rich legacy of Delhi’s past.

Alai Minar is an unfinished, historical monument located within the Qutub Minar complex in the Mehrauli area of Delhi in India. It’s construction was started by the Sultan Ala-ud-din Khilji in year 1311 AD with an aim to build a tower twice as tall as the Qutub Minar, but the construction was stopped in between due to his death in the year 1316 AD, leaving only the big base structure of the first story completed. The unfinished structure, built of stones, rubble etc showcases grand vision of the Sultan Ala-ud-din Khilji , which was left unfulfilled.  The Alai Minar is 24.5 to 27 metres high, as it was never completed, and has a circumference of 77.72 metres , with a 5.8 metres thick outer wall. After the death of the Sultan Ala-ud-din Khilji, his successors did not complete the construction due to political instability and further due to the end of the Khilji rule . Since the Qutub Minar is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on all days of the week, so is the visit to the Alai Minar . It can be visited together with the Qutub Minar, the entry to which is ticketed with the charges being Rs. 35 for Indian citizens; Rs. 550 for foreign tourists; and free for children below 15 years of age. It is conveniently located on a major road hence can be reached very easily by bus, taxi, tuk-tuks, Metro trains etc. Metro Station named Qutub Minar on the Yellow Line, is very close, from where Tuk-Tuks can be hired for Rs.20 on shared basis and it hardly takes 10 minutes to reach.
